Set the scene in Savannah

At Savannah’s SCAD Film Studios, students collaborate across creative disciplines on the largest and most comprehensive university backlot in the nation. SCAD Film Studios features an 11-acre backlot, an LED volume stage, multiple production spaces, and a green screen studio. The backlot currently consists of over 40 separate street façades and more than 8,000 square feet of interior dressed set space, modeling Savannah’s iconic historic district, big city streetscapes that include a subway entrance and brownstones, and small-town USA scenes reflecting a variety of eras. Two industry-ready soundstages are also currently under construction.

Students from top-ranked SCAD degree programs in acting, animation, film and television, immersive reality, production design, sound design, and visual effects film and create content on productions that model industry practices. In addition to the backlot, SCAD students add style and authenticity to their films and TV shows from a 17,000 square-foot production design facility housing classrooms, modern costume design sewing labs, an innovative industrial garment conveyor for storing costumes, and a massive, high-tech prop-making shop with tools for woodcutting, welding, and painting.

Make magic in Midtown Atlanta

Empowered by next-generation technology, state-of-the-art studios, and unparalleled instruction, SCAD students are ready to make their mark on the massive film and TV industry in Atlanta. From a 60,000 square-foot former TV studio nestled in Midtown, SCAD students in top-ranked acting, animation, film and television, production design, and visual effects programs learn the full scope of the production process as they complete films, TV pilots, and immersive content.

Immersion in Georgia’s multibillion-dollar entertainment industry offers students myriad opportunities to lend their talents to blockbuster film and TV productions throughout the region. They also gain experience on student-led productions like chefATL, a seven-episode docuseries that examines Atlanta’s rich history and culture through its world-renowned cuisine filmed on a SCAD soundstage and on-location at local award-winning restaurants.

Generate new worlds with LED volume stages

SCAD is the only university in the world with two LED volume stages. Students in Atlanta and Savannah are empowered to unleash their creativity and explore new frontiers using these leading-edge environments — the same technology used on Marvel Cinematic Universe films and smash-hit shows like The Mandalorian.

SCAD’s LED volume stages combine precise camera tracking — made possible by a Red Komodo 6K camera and a stYpe RedSpy tracking system — with 3D, real-time rendering powered by Unreal Engine and a graphics workflow from Disguise. Through this combination of live production and digital backgrounds, the 40 x 20 x 17-foot LED wall screen displays allow students and clients to create massive, immersive virtual environments that take productions to new heights. Since their opening, professionally helmed films, TV shows, ads, and a luxury brand jewelry campaign have created content on stage at SCAD’s LED volumes, providing internship and job opportunities for students behind the scenes.

The stars align with the SCAD Casting Office

Through the only professionally run casting offices in higher education — located in Savannah and Atlanta — SCAD students have booked more than 1,000 roles in major motion pictures and television series. The SCAD Casting Office is led by professional casting directors-turned-educators Andra Reeve-Rabb — formerly the director of primetime casting at CBS Television — and Alpha Tyler — a veteran of casting at DreamWorks, Warner Bros., Paramount, BET, and Tyler Perry Studios. Under their tutelage, the casting office provides unique, career-launching opportunities on sets in Georgia, Los Angeles, New York City, and other global markets, offering SCAD acting students the opportunity to earn their Screen Actors Guild cards before graduation.

Across locations, SCAD features state-of-the-art technology that rivals the world’s most complete studio environments. From initial concept to the final stages of postproduction, the SCAD film and television program provides students with industry-standard software and advanced equipment for all industry production models. In editing suites, students cut together their exceptional work on Mac Pros outfitted with programs like Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, and Final Cut X.
